“Life was just great. I was living in Sydney with my now husband, had a great social life, a good job, my parents had decided to move to Australia, (which I was thrilled about) , and I hardly had a care in the world. One phone call changed all that!
My sister asked me to call Dad, which I thought was a strange request. Why didn’t Dad just call me himself? So I made the call that broke my heart and sent my world into a tail spin!
“Nicola, there is no easy way to say this, your mum has lung cancer, it is inoperable and she has been given 18 months to live”.
“Oh no”. I screamed and sobbed “I am coming home straight away”.
Mum took the phone and tried to reason with me. She sounded ‘just mum’, so not unwell. This can’t be happening as she is only 53! She tried to get me stay in Sydney for a while longer. I was having none of it, and just 2 days after learning of my mum’s fate, I was on a plane to London. The worst flight I have ever taken! Thank goodness I made the decision to go straight away, as although she was given 18 months to live, she died just 5 short weeks after her diagnosis. “
During the grieving process Nicola bought herself a book . No, she did not go out looking for a pink book, but in the queue of an Australia Post outlet she found herself staring at a pink spiral bound notebook, and decided to buy it. Grief is a unique thing to us all, and taking refuge in a note book was a great healing tool for her.
At the time the pink notebook helped Nicola make some plans, reflect on her life and to help her get life back on track. She then bought her friend Claire a Pink Book when she was also going through a difficult time in her life, who then bought her sister a Pink Book, and that is where the story begins. Friends buying friends a Pink Book to help and here we stand today with hundreds of members, all armed with their own little Pink Book’s!!
While conducting some research for her new training business in 2007, Nicola discovered that there were many corporate networking groups, but few social ones. This highlighted a gap, a need for something new; a group for women focusing on who they are as opposed to what they do. So armed with this discovery and a little encouragement from Claire, Nicola set about organizing some events.
The feedback following proved Nicola had hit the mark! The Pink Book Club provided opportunities for women to have some time out, try something new and form new connections with like minded women.
Community connection is a big part of The Pink Book Club. We are all busy, being busy, and at times we need to support and be supported by others. It keeps us grounded and is good for the soul!
